A friend of a friend spotted it a few blocks from our house. My wife and I drove over, found that the ignition was intact, and I drove it home. No apparent damage, but the van's contents were scattered all over the interior. It doesn't look like the thieves found anything they could quickly sell, and they left behind what I'd consider high value items like a Hi Lift jack, come-along, and some tools.
The local police told me older cars especially can be easily stolen with jiggle keys, filed down VW keys that seem to work easily. My van was locked but the door locks weren't damaged. This is an interesting older story about why so many cars get stolen in Portland
